About Hunter S. Thomas

More About Hunter Thompson:

A selection of Hunter’s San Francisco Examiner columns, written in the 80’s, appear in his book Generation of Swine.  The two columns that address the sex business are “Dealing with Pigs,” that reacts to the Meese Commission’s assertion that pornography produces violence, and “A Clean, Ill-Lighted Place,” about the AVN Awards, which Hunter attended with Art and Jim Mitchell in 1986.

Aficionados will be familiar with Hunter’s books and articles, and with the films Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Where the Buffalo Roam.

I highly recommend the biography  Hunter: the strange and savage life of Hunter S.Thompson, by E. Jean Carroll.  The recent Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson by Jann S. Wenner, Corey Seymour, and Johnny Depp is also informing.  Both books include a wealth of quoted memories of Hunter by his friends.

A cache of information on Dr. Hunter S. Thompson’s life and works can be found at www.gonzo.org. The Joke's Over: Bruised Memories: Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson, and Me, by Ralph Steadman is the memoir of Hunter’s illustrator/collaborator.

The documentary Breakfast with Hunter, available at www.breakfastwithhunter.com, presents some great material.  And Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride, is of interest--and contains footage from the Mitchell Brothers film mentioned in my book, which was titled The Crazy Never Die.

Photos of Hunter, with another dancer and me, that were taken by photographer Michael Nichols during Hunter’s tenure as Night Manager of the O’Farrell, appear in the book Gonzo.  This book is a collection of Hunter’s photographs and archives, edited by Steve Crist, with an introduction by Johnny Depp, published by AMMO BOOKS : HOME.  I am grateful to have been granted permission to print one of these photos in Chapter 5 of my book.
